Kazincbarcika is a vibrant and bustling city – thanks to the KolorCity project it is home to colourful firewalls that adorn the city’s panels with pop culture references and is also known for the locals’ love for water and ice sports. The regional boating lake and the surrounding park will be complemented by a swimming pool and ice rink, transforming the area into a sports centrum. The combined formulation of two different functions as an architectural unit is reflected in the new public building. This allows for serious synergies: it facilitates the flow between the two activities and the sharing of certain elements.
The building’s parts are rotated ninety degrees compared to each other and collide into one unit in a tectonic manner. Based on this play between the masses as well as their surroundings, a spatial structure was created that blends in harmoniously with the recreational environment, which surrounds the area. We placed the ice rink parallel to the creek, while the swimming pool was elevated to the level of the road, offering a lavish view of the boating lake. The building appears as a neutral shell at first glance, however, it follows the principle of hiding and releasing. Its interior palette is related to the colour scheme of the city’s landscaping project – the intense interior colours radiate through the large openings, almost erupting through the glass walls and lamellas into the outside world.
