Situated on a slope towards the street, this flat roofed house is composed of two shifted blocks. Just as the old layout reflected maximally the life model of the 70’s on a minimum scale, the living spaces created by the reconstruction also maximize the minimum. The petty layout became generous through the redesign of spaces; highly fragmented levels were turned into permeable, coherent and rhythmic areas. From top to bottom the interventions affected positively not only the use and impression of spaces but also the physical functioning of the building as a whole. Instead of the view the house establishes intimate connection to the back garden – this was achieved through
some serious ground work and the intercalation of an atrium which provides sunlight even for the ground level actually situated underground. Behind the atrium the mechanical rooms were sunk and their wooden roof turned into the floor of a terrace connected both to the middle, living room level and to the sloping backyard. Architectural considerations were complemented by modern structural and mechanical solutions that take advantage – within reasonable limits – of all the benefits that 21st century technology can offer in terms of sustainable comfort.
